Infrastructure operator Cellnex Telecom has teamed up with Spain’s airports operator Aena to activate the first mobile private network based on 5G technology in the country’s airports and one of the first on the European scene. The network was installed by Cellnex at San Sebastian airport, located in Hondarribia next to the French-Spanish border, and will be used to carry out several use cases over the coming months.

The trials cover drone-based operations in the areas of security and advanced monitoring, as well as the acquisition, collection and secure processing of environmental data (gases and particles in suspension, temperature, humidity and noise) via the Cellnex SmartBrain platform.

Cellnex added that it will be collaborating with Nokia as its partner for the 5G network and Inetum for the supply and operation of the drones used in the pilots.
