Claro Puerto Rico has activated millimetre wave (mmWave) spectrum in selected locations as it seeks to densify its 5G coverage. According to TeleMundo, mmWave connectivity has been enabled in tourist areas such as the Coliseum of Puerto Rico, Placita de Santurce, Coca Cola Music Hall, Paseo Tablado de Guaynabo and the Mario Quijote Morales Coliseum. As a result, Claro now offers 5G to 94% of the population, with coverage of all 77 of 78 municipalities. Enrique Ortiz de Montellano, President and CEO of Claro Puerto Rico, commented: āOur aggressive and sustained plan of more than USD180 million annually in network expansion demonstrates our commitment to providing the best technology available.ā
While the precise spectrum band has not been disclosed, TeleGeography notes that Claro successfully bid on a pair of 1Ć425MHz licences in the 27500MHz-27925MHz (28GHz) band in 2019. The mmWave concessions cover San Juan and Mayaguez-Aguadilla-Ponce.
