Claro Colombia has successfully trialled an industrial 5G solution alongside state-backed oil firm Ecopetrol. The tests took place at the Barrancabermeja Refinery, and supported remote assistance, video analytics and the transmission of information and data in real time.

The trial was enabled by the Ministry of Information Technologies and Communications (Ministerio de Tecnologias de la Informacion y las Comunicaciones, MinTIC), which granted Claro temporary use of 5G spectrum. While the frequency band was not disclosed, MinTIC has previously permitted the country’s mobile operators to utilise the 3.5GHz band for 5G trials.

TeleGeography notes that Colombia’s long-awaited 5G multi-band spectrum auction will commence on 20 December 2023. MinTIC will distribute spectrum in the 700MHz, 1900MHz, 2.5GHz, 3.5GHz and 26GHz bands.
