Alaskan telecoms operator GCI has extended its 5G coverage to the rural communities of Nome and Kotzebue. GCI Rural Affairs Director Jenifer Nelson commented: ‘For two rural communities way up in Northwest Alaska to have arguably better connectivity than New York City, more than 3,500 miles away, is a huge deal. GCI is committed to closing the digital divide in Alaska, and with the arrival of 5G in Nome and Kotzebue, we are two big steps closer to our goal.’
TeleGeography notes that GCI was the first US cellco to launch 5G services in Alaska when it switched on its network in Anchorage in April 2020. 5G connectivity was subsequently extended to Eagle River, Fairbanks, Girdwood, Juneau, Kodiak, Palmer, Talkeetna, Valdez, Wasilla and Unalaska.
