Costa Rican state utility/telecoms firm Grupo ICE has selected Finnish vendor Nokia to deploy a 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) network for its Radiografica Costarricense (RACSA) unit. The network will serve the government, institutional and business sectors. Marco Acuna, president of Grupo ICE, commented: ‘The social, economic and environmental benefits will reach the entire population, and we will promote the attraction of foreign direct investment.’
Grupo ICE expects the 5G FWA network to go live before the end of 2023, with a ‘massive commercialisation’ (i.e. mobile 5G launch) scheduled for 2024. RACSA, which has been accused of under-utilising its 5G-suitable spectrum, currently holds a 100MHz block of 3.5GHz spectrum.
