Telecom Italia (TIM) has enabled surgeons to perform a successful remote-controlled eye operation in Bari by utilising its 5G network. Professor Gianni Alessio remotely controlled an iRes 2KHz laser from his office to operate on a patient in the operating room, assisted by a surgical control team, with an iVis Remote Control Station enabling the real-time control with 3D visualisation. 5G small cells were connected through TIM’s core network via a 10Gbps fibre backhaul link enabling latency of less than 50ms between the Control Station and the laser.
