Mauritius Telecom (MT), the public telecommunications operator of Mauritius, announced on Tuesday June 18 the extension of its 5G network nationwide. All of the incumbent’s customers can now enjoy the exceptional download speeds of up to 1Gbps, improved latency, and seamless connectivity that the company promises.

“ This technology will enable the rise of revolutionary innovations such as augmented and virtual reality and the Internet of Things (IoT). It also promises to revolutionize sectors such as transport, production, health and even sport ,” MT said in a press release.

It was in July 2021 that MT introduced 5G in Mauritius, one month after obtaining an operating license and frequencies from the Information and Communication Technology Authority (ICTA). The incumbent operator’s fifth-generation mobile technology was then available in five specific areas of the country. In April 2024, the public company launched ultra-broadband in Rodrigues.

The national deployment of 5G by Maurice Telecom should help to democratize the service in the Mauritian telecoms market. This should also make it possible to strengthen competition, particularly in the 5G segment where competitors from MT, Emtel and MTML (Chile) are also present. At the end of 2022, the company claimed 1.05 million customers while the latest official statistics show 1.97 million for the entire country.
