Panamanian mobile operator +Movil said the country’s telecommunications services regulator Asep has authorised it to start testing 5G services in the 3.5 GHz band, the first operator to do so. It added that the aim was to set up a mobile network that provides faster data speeds, lower latency and improved capabilities compared to previous generations.

The pilots include one in the retail sector, where an extended 5G LAN network will be tested for video surveillance systems in distribution centres, and another in one of Panama’s main ports, where a 5G Wi-Fi system will be set up to remotely control surveillance platforms.

The announcement comes after Asep said it would be amending the country’s National Frequency Allocation Plan (PNAF) to allocate around 176 MHz in medium bands and 3,250 MHz in high bands to mobile operators to boost the forthcoming launch of 5G.

Movil+ is owned by Cable & Wireless Panama, a subsidiary of Liberty Latin America (LLA), which reached a deal to acquire Claro Panama from America Movil in 2021.
