Athens-based wireless equipment vendor Intracom Telecom said Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) technology field tests conducted at one of Italian wholesale operator Open Fiber’s commercial sites delivered 1 Gbps download speeds at 5km distance. Open Fiber has been using Intracom Telecom’s FWA equipment to access “digitally underserved” areas of the country since 2019.
The trials in the southern Puglia region used Intracom Telecom’s WiBAS-branded G5 dual-BS hub and G5 GigaConnect terminals operating at 28 GHz, paving the way for what the Greek company described as the first commercial FWA network for gigabit to the home.
Intracom Telecom’s FWA platforms feature advanced algorithms for dynamic capacity allocation, maximising concurrent subscriber connections and automations to expedite terminal installation and service provisioning even in challenging terrains.
The WiBAS family of FWA products is already operational globally with more than 50 networks, including ten in Italy.
Open Fiber was last year awarded a total of EUR 1.8 billion to bring gigabit connections to homes, offices and public buildings in Puglia, Tuscany, Lazio, Sicily, Emilia-Romagna, Campania, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Veneto and Lombardy under the EUR 3.4 billion ‘Italia a 1 Giga’ project, part of the country’s wider post-pandemic National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).
