Lithuanian cellco Bite has confirmed that it stopped selling 2G and 3G handsets earlier this week. In a press release dated 12 October the mobile operator noted that the decision to stop selling older devices was made to coincide with the launch of 5G technology, which is scheduled to take place before the end of this month.

Mindaugas Rauba, Director of Technology at Bite, commented: ā€˜We estimate that about 10,000 people still use the old push-button phones ā€¦ In preparation for the start of 5G, from now on we will no longer offer devices that support lower than 4G communication technologies to Lithuanian residents.ā€™

TeleGeographyĀ notes that Bite was awarded 5G-suitable spectrum in the 3.5GHz and 700MHz bands by the Communications Regulatory Authority (RRT) in August 2022.
