The past week has confirmed 2025 as the pivotal year for standalone 5G deployment, with multiple operators announcing ambitious coverage targets following the delays experienced in 2024. BT Group made the boldest commitment, pledging to achieve 99% UK population coverage with SA 5G by 2030—a target the company claims is four years ahead of its rivals. EE, BT’s mobile arm, has rebranded its SA network as “5G+” to better communicate performance benefits to customers, with plans to reach 130 cities by year-end and 41 million people by spring 2026.
The UK market is increasingly competitive, with VMO2 claiming current leadership at 70% population coverage. BT’s announcement appears designed to establish clear market leadership, backed by significant technical innovations, including the European debut of Ericsson’s AIR 3284 triple-band massive MIMO radios and Advanced RAN Coordination technology.
Reduced Capability devices have crossed from trial phase to commercial deployment, marking a significant milestone for 5G’s evolution. E& UAE became the first operator in the country to activate RedCap on its 5G SA network, initially supporting smartwatches before expanding to industrial applications. The deployment, backed by a three-year agreement with Ericsson, positions RedCap as a foundation for 5G-Advanced capabilities in the Middle East and Africa region.
Market analysts at Omdia have identified 2025 as the first year when hardware and network ecosystems are properly aligned for RedCap, with evidence including the technology’s inclusion in Apple’s latest Watch. Whilst module costs remain elevated, prices are expected to decrease rapidly as adoption scales, particularly in China where government subsidies are anticipated to accelerate market growth.
Enterprise private 5G deployments demonstrated remarkable versatility this week, extending into aerospace, defence, and maritime applications. Airbus and Ericsson successfully deployed private 5G at the Hamburg production facility, with Toulouse following by 2026 as part of a broader European and international rollout. The deployment supports advanced manufacturing use cases including 3D simulation, augmented reality, parts traceability, and predictive maintenance.
In a notable first, Telefónica deployed a private 5G network aboard a NATO naval vessel, enabling secure, low-latency communications within the fleet rather than back to shore. The pilot, running until December, supports communication with drones, surface vehicles, and autonomous submarines, representing a significant expansion of 5G into maritime defence applications.
HPE also entered the private 5G arena with new radios based on its Athonet acquisition, challenging established players Ericsson and Nokia in the enterprise market. The company’s BR-150 solution operates on CBRS spectrum and was showcased at the Ryder Cup in New York.
The relationship between artificial intelligence and 5G networks continued to evolve, with Qualcomm announcing pre-commercial 6G hardware availability by 2028 whilst unveiling its Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset with AI-powered 5G capabilities. The new modem delivers up to 12.5 Gbit/s download speeds and uses AI models to predict and prevent reception degradation, achieving 15% performance improvements.
Industry analysis suggests AI is currently more prevalent within network infrastructure for automation and management than in end-user applications, though this balance is expected to shift. Enterprises prioritise private 5G primarily for security, reliability, and privacy rather than advanced AI features, with over $10 billion projected to be spent on private networks by 2030.
The US Federal Communications Commission voted to expedite wireless infrastructure deployment, proposing rules to prevent states and local authorities from unlawfully blocking 5G and future 6G rollouts. The initiative includes a “rocket docket” process for resolving permitting disputes and aims to address regulatory barriers that effectively prohibit network modernisation.
Charter Communications demonstrated an innovative approach to 5G deployment, testing “fibre-powered DAS” architecture that delivers CBRS signals over hybrid fibre/coax networks. The system, developed with CableLabs and Rogers Communications, could transform cable’s DOCSIS infrastructure into ultra-dense 5G supercells. Field trials are planned for Denver by year-end, with potential for industry-wide adoption if successful.
