The Netherlands’ Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy on 31 March opened a consultation on the draft regulations for the upcoming national 5G auction of 3.5GHz frequencies, including the auction set-up and the proposed minimum yield of EUR176.1 million (USD190 million). After the auction expected in autumn 2023, at least three major telecoms players will be able to offer services to consumers and companies using 300MHz of 3.5GHz spectrum nationally from 1 December, while 100MHz will remain available for ‘local wireless applications of companies and organisations, such as in the port of Rotterdam’. Satellite company Intelsat has been allowed to temporarily retain 80MHz in this band to continue its activities in the Netherlands until a new location in Greece is operational, with 1 January 2024 set as a target date for the move.
