Session 1 – Markets and Competition

This session considers concepts of markets and competition as they relate to the fundamental tasks of economic regulation and underpin the work of the regulatory authority. This includes:

  • The basic economics of markets
  • Competition and efficiency
  • Market power and monopoly
  • Market failure, definition and assessment
  • Network effects and externalities

Session 2 – Converged Markets and Regulators

This session widens the scope of the course to consider the new regulatory challenges presented by new and converging markets, content primacy and the desire to reduce regulation. Subjects include net neutrality, premium entertainment content, OTT applications and multiple service provision.
