TIM Brasil’s 5G Standalone (SA) network is accounting for 10% of data traffic in the cities of Sao Paulo and Brasilia, Teletime writes, citing the firm’s CTO Leonardo Capdeville. In Rio de Janeiro, where services were activated on 22 August, 5G already contributes 8% of the operator’s total traffic.
Across Brazil, between 6% and 7% of TIM’s customers have 5G smartphones, with this proportion rising to around 10% in cities such as Goiania. TIM notes that three-quarters of devices on sale in its stores are 5G-ready. Android users with 5G devices do not need a new SIM card to access 5G SA, but iPhone customers need to switch SIM card.
The Italian-backed operator launched its first 3.5GHz 5G SA network in Brasilia on 6 July 2022 and has since added coverage in cities including Belo Horizonte, Porto Alegre, Joao Pessoa, Sao Paulo, Curitiba, Goiania, Salvador, Florianopolis, Palmas, Rio de Janeiro and Vitoria.
