Ericsson has achieved a legal victory in Brazil against Apple in a dispute over the use of 5G technology patents, reported O Globo. The Superior Court of Justice (STJ) determined that Apple must pay USD 3 for each device (iPhone or iPad) sold in Brazil that contains elements protected by three Ericsson patents that allow the connection of the devices to the 5G network.

The dispute dates back to January 2022, when Apple decided not to renew a global patent licensing agreement with Ericsson. However, Ericsson claimed that Apple continued to sell its devices using elements protected by patents without the proper payment of royalties. Besides Brazil, Ericsson filed a series of lawsuits against Apple in other countries, including the US, Colombia, Germany and the Netherlands.
