France’s government has announced the launch of a new R&D programme focused on future networks, which will be supported by grants from the ‘France 2030’ multi-billion euro investment plan. With a budget of EUR 65 million over a six-year period, the programme will be managed by the national centre for scientific research CNRS, the CEA (Commissariat Energie Atomique) and the academic institute IMT (Institut Mines-Telecom). Its roadmap includes the launch of three calls for projects and ten targeted work groups to develop sovereign platforms and systems, powered by 5G and the new generation of networks.
The IMT will lead the ‘France 6G’ project, which aims to create a French ecosystem of players working together on 6G innovation and standardisation. Activities will be coordinated so that academic institutes, public institutions and industrial partners can better contribute to the wider European and international efforts in these areas.
