LG Electronics is launching its 5G private network business after its self-developed solution recently received the ‘Domestic Network Equipment Certification’ – for what the company said was the first time in the 5G private network industry – from the Korea Network Industry Association. The certification is granted after examining whether development and production are done domestically, and can be used as proof when supplying products to public institutions. This certification allows for improvements in 5G private network speed, stability and operational cost reductions through software upgrades without the need for hardware replacements – for both the RAN and 5G core.
Leveraging its software capabilities and 30,000 communications patents, LG said it will offer customised solutions tailored to various needs and installation environments. This will include blocking external access to private 5G networks, or if required, connectivity to public cloud services. LG Electronics entered this market in 2018 with the acquisition of Robostar Co. It then invested in numerous startups such as SG Robotics, Acryl and Bossa Nova. Robostar makes, among other things, vertical multi-joint robots that are used in production facilities for displays and semiconductors.
In addition, the company will provide integrated management solutions that connect and control devices such as robots, CCTV, and smart safety equipment through 5G private networks. LG said it has already tested its private network in smart factories, logistics centres, hospitals and other settings. It has reference sites at its own Tennessee plant, which makes over one million appliances each year, a smart factory in Chungcheongbuk-do, a logistics centre in Incheon, and a university hospital in Seoul.
The company believes the global market for 5G private networks will reach USD 11.8 billion by 2028. LG Electronics is able to manufacture many components for its 5G private network offering in-house and is therefore not dependent on external suppliers.
