Malaysian mobile network operator (MNO) Maxis has confirmed its intention to sign an agreement which will allow it to access the 5G infrastructure operated by wholesale provider Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB).
With Maxis the only one of Malaysia’s incumbent cellcos yet to ink an ‘Access Agreement’ with DNB, the former’s board has now proposed executing the finalised deal which will ultimately enable it to launch 5G services commercially. Confirming its plans in a statement issued to the Bursa Malaysia stock exchange, Maxis said it will seek shareholder approval for the agreement with DNB at an extraordinary general meeting which is expected to be convened ‘in the third quarter of 2023’. Subject to it gaining shareholder approval, Maxis expects to be able to launch commercial 5G offerings ‘soon after’.
According to Maxis, it expects to incur operating expenses of approximately MYR360 million (USD79 million) per year for the ‘National 5G Wholesale Network Product’ offered by DNB. Explaining its decision to move ahead with the agreement, meanwhile, Maxis said it ‘believes that the access to the 5G Products and Services is necessary for [it] to remain competitive in the telecommunications industry’.
