NTT Data had a bunch of 5G private wireless demonstrations, derived from its real world services, to show off at Mobile World Congress Las Vegas last week.
“One of the biggest things we’re seeing from enterprises is indoor location tracking, precision location tracking down to the millimeter,” Parm Sandhu, VP of enterprise 5G products and services, told Silverlinings during a meeting last Thursday.
This service uses cameras in a rack above the tools to enable computer vision, a form of artificial intelligence (AI), that delivers relevant information from digital images. In this case, the images are updated 240 times a second.
This kind of service requires 5G to operate, because you can’t run such services on Wi-Fi. This is because the traffic on a Wi-Fi network is arbitrary, and the network can be slowed down by a large file download on the network. In fact, the 5G service is run over a micro-slice to protect the system. This is easily achieved on a standalone 5G core on a private enterprise network.
Other applications NTT showed off included systems that could detect minute paint scratches when painting cars, a system for monitoring how long workers took to deposit items in distinct receptacles and a virtual reality hard hat!
NTT Data has just signed a multi-year deal with Qualcomm to develop 5G devices for enterprise users. Unlike slender iPhones or Galaxy phones, these devices are chunky!
