Telkomsel, Ericsson and Qualcomm has revealed plans to work together to develop a 5G-based fixed wireless access (FWA) technology roadmap in Indonesia. In a press release, Ericsson noted that the Indonesian telco has received clearance from the Ministry of Communications and Informatics (MCI, or KemKominfo) to conduct advanced 5G technology trials using new frequency spectrum of 3.5GHz and 26GHz band via a temporary permit. As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate in December 2022 Telkomsel began work with its equipment partners under a temporary licence granted by KemKominfo to explore the advantages offered in terms of wide area coverage, high capacity and low latency in the 5G mmWave band.

This time, the trio have kicked off a 5G FWA trial with sub-6GHz (Sub-6) spectrum and millimetre Wave (mmWave) extended range with’ Gigabit last mile connectivity through affordable 5G Sub-6 and mmWave devices’, using Ericsson’s 5G NR-Dual Connectivity technology in 3.5GHz and 26GHz frequency spectrum. Further, Ericsson has confirmed that the 5G FWA roadmap has been expanded ‘to become the first in Indonesia to deliver 5G Standalone NR-DC (Dual Connectivity), combining 100MHz bandwidth at the 3.5GHz frequency and 800MHz bandwidth at the 26GHz frequency for ultra-capacity, lower latency capabilities, and peak throughput speeds of up to 7.37Gbps.’

The statement added: ‘The Ericsson ultra-light Massive MIMO AIR3268, Radio Processor 6651, Cell Site Gateway and 5G Core are provided to support 5G network slicing, [and] combined with the UE Route Selection Policy (URSP) feature on commercial handsets using Android 12, will ensure the best user experience on the Telkomsel network.’
