The German Federal Network Agency, the Bundesnetzagentur, has started a proceeding against 1&1 due to delays in the operator’s 5G network launch, Deutsche Press Agentur (DPA) reported. According to a letter from the regulator to 1&1 seen by the press agency, the company could face a fine of up to EUR 50 million.

The company has put into operation only five sites with 5G mobile services instead of the 1,000 planned by the end of 2022. This means the operator may miss the coverage targets under its spectrum licence awarded in 2019.

1&1 said the delays in building the network were due to problems arising with partners. In addition, the operator said that it could not find enough places for new masts and roof locations for antennas. A company spokeswoman said the opening of the process was not a surprise, and 1&1 will present its position to the authority in a hearing.
