South Korean mobile operators SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus will offer free additional mobile data to all of their customers in March. The initiative supports the government’s campaign to help people reduce financial burdens amid rising inflation, Yonhap news agency reports. SK Telecom will offer 30 GB of data free to 3G, LTE and 5G users aged 19 years or older in March, while KT and LG Uplus customers will receive similar data packages.

The three operators also plan to soon launch mid-tier, more affordable and diversified 5G data plans for their high-speed mobile network subscribers. Back in 2022, South Korea’s Science and ICT Minister Lee Jong-ho met with executives of SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus to request the introduction of a new mid-tier mobile data product category. The request came amid recent calls that currently available two tier 5G data plans, for usages between 10 GB and 12 GB, and 110 GB and 150 GB per month, failed to properly support the current monthly 5G average usages ranging between 23 GB and 27 GB.

The South Korean government has recently been increasing its efforts to ease people’s financial burdens by freezing railroad, public transportation and utility fees amid high-flying heating bills, interest rates and inflation.
