16 February 2023 BANGKOK: GSMA is pleased to announce that True and Siriraj Hospital have been named as the GSMA 5G Industry City Challenge winner for the “5G Living Challenge Award”.

The GSMA 5G Industry Challenge launched last summer to build on the success of the GSMA 5G Transformation Hub, which showcases the most innovative 5G solutions in  the world and now includes more than 50 case studies. The Challenge is designed to show how industries across the globe are making the most of 5G and to recognise those leading the way with the most innovative use cases.

Silvia Presello, Chief Analyst at GSMA, mentioned “’In many countries, healthcare systems are under strain, and on average one -third of critically ill patients die in ambulances. In Thailand, at The Siriraj Hospital, 5G -enabled processes are being used to reduce waiting time at the emergency room, to close monitor in-patients’ conditions, and alert physicians. Since 5G technology was put in place at the Siriraj Hospital in Thailand, in late 2021, the survival rate of emergency patients has been greatly improved. This is a winning example of how 5G can help healthcare systems all over the world.”

Thailand’s incumbent mobile operator True has deployed an independent 5G dedicated network for Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok, which pioneers the efficiency and effectiveness of the healthcare system by integrating Mobile Edge Computing (MEC), innovative 5G applications, AI, cloud, and IoT technologies.

5G is used to pass real-time information about patients travelling in ambulances to doctors in hospitals, “everyone knows what to do as soon as the patient arrives at the hospital”. 5G connections (such as 5G HD cameras and AR glasses) on ambulances can also be used to consult remotely with experts in emergency center, improving first aid more efficiency and reducing mortality rate. The 5G innovative services being used in emergency departments with automated systems that can closely monitor the condition of inpatients and to alert doctors. In addition, 5G further enables AI applications to improve diagnosis and treatment efficiency. 5G provides higher bandwidth and responsiveness to support 4K resolution audio-visual communication, enabling precise medical monitoring and online consultation remotely.

The combination of 5G and edge computing enables medicine vehicles to enhance automatic transport of drugs and medical equipment in a secure, low-latency connection from the central pharmaceutical department to other hospital buildings.

Siriraj Hospital’s solution also using edge computing devices to integrate into 5G networks with  public and private clouds, which allowed hospital staff can use 5G private network to access on-site data in highly secured manner. “Cloud computing makes it easier to store data and share information. Big data management helps doctors and management make better decisions, and artificial intelligence improves the speed, efficiency, and precision of medical imaging. New ICT technologies with 5G are making healthcare smarter, more convenient and more efficient.”

5G technology will optimize healthcare and patient experiences with unprecedented levels of connectivity, while increasing precision and efficiency in healthcare service. With the 5G + UHD video conference + AI solution, medical experts can remotely assist doctors to check and diagnose patients in real time. Patients in remote areas can obtain remote diagnosis without consuming a lot of time and transportation costs.  Siriraj Hospital built an excellent case in 5G medical hub and 5G Hospital on indoor scenario, innovation lab and mobile clinics.  Solutions are replicated to its affiliated hospitals and more hospitals, enable technology and medical care to benefit more people and improve social welfare.
