MTN Irancell has pumped more than USD10bn into Iran since launch

The CEO of MTN Irancell in Iran says the company has invested more than USD10 billion since its launch in October 2006. Abbasi Arend is quoted by Digiato as saying that the operator now has more than 16,300 active 4G sites and close to 400 5G sites, giving 82% population coverage for 4G and around 5% for 5G. There are around 300,000 daily 5G network users among its more than 52 million mobile subscriptions, he added.

In the fixed broadband sector, Irancell has deployed 4G TD-LTE fixed wireless broadband services in around 160 cities and it now has 760,000 TD-LTE subscriptions. Meanwhile, 2,000km of fibre-optic network has been rolled out to support fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) services in 36 cities.

TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that MTN Irancell is 49% owned by MTN Group of South Africa, with the remainder held by Iran Electronic Development Company (IEDC).
