According to the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), there is no scientific evidence that the 5G network poses any health risks. Mr Kashufu Inuwa Abdullahi, director general of NITDA, revealed the above mentioned in a recent interview with reporters in Kano.

He stated that for Nigeria to flourish in digital technology, the country needed to adopt the 5G network.

“There was once a conspiracy theory that the 5G network had health effects, but there is no scientific evidence for this.”

“Based on scientific evidence, the frequency used in microwaves, refrigerators, televisions, and other electronic appliances is more hazardous than 5G network technology,” he said.

Kashifu stated that the future was digital and that Nigeria needed to be digital to succeed in the twenty-first century.

“New emerging technologies such as self-driving cars, artificial intelligence, and others are coming up, and these technologies are computers that require a communication channel, which is the 5G network.”

“The sooner we embrace it, the better for us; even if we don’t,” he continued, “others will.”

He stated that ICT was now contributing more to Nigeria’s economy than oil and gas.

“Before the creation of NITDA, the ICT sector contributed less than 0.5 per cent of the country’s GDP; now it contributes 17.93 per cent,” Kashifu said.

President Muhammadu Buhari has also launched the National Policy on Fifth Generation (5G) technology for Nigeria’s Digital Economy. The President has directed that all security institutions leverage the new technology as soon as possible to improve the country’s security.

He stated that the federal government would utilise the opportunities afforded by 5G for the nation’s economy, security, and well-being.
