Telefonica Deutschland, which provides services under the brand name O2, has announced that its 5G network now reaches 75% of the population via more than 18,000 antennas. The firm added that its 5G rollout is significantly ahead of schedule; it originally expected to supply half of Germans with the high speeds data service by the end of this year, but this interim goal was reached in July. Telefonica is focusing on the deployment of 5G in the 3.5GHz band in densely populated regions, including Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Cologne, while in more rural areas it is using 700MHz frequencies. By the end of 2025 the operator is aiming to cover the entire population with 5G.

Rival operator Vodafone Germany has, meanwhile, revealed that it also reached its 5G expansion target for 2022 ahead of schedule, with the network now covering 60 million Germans via 41,000 5G antennas. A total of around 1,000 construction projects were implemented nationwide in October to eliminate 107 dead spots in mobile broadband (4G) coverage, increase capacity and speed at 490 locations and bring 5G to more people. In addition, Vodafone notes that its ā€˜5G+ā€™ 5G Standalone (5G SA) network comprises a total of 2,750 base stations with more than 8,000 5G+ antennas, with this providing coverage to more than 20 million people, while 2G technology reaches 99.9% of the population and 4G services cover 98.7% of homes. In total, 25,700 of the firmā€™s 26,200 base stations are now equipped withĀ LTEĀ antennas.
