Telkomsel working with Ericsson and Qualcomm on 5G mmWave

Indonesia’s Telkomsel (Telekomunikasi Selular), which is majority owned by Telkom Indonesia, is working with Ericsson and Qualcomm to carry out trials of fixed wireless access (FWA) services using 5G extended-range technology – specifically, 800MHz of bandwidth in the millimetre-wave (mmWave) 26GHz frequency range. The trials are being conducted under a temporary licence granted by the Ministry of Communication and Information (MCI, aka KemKominfo) to explore the advantages offered in terms of wide area coverage, high capacity and low latency in the 5G mmWave band. In initial trials, the companies reportedly achieved peak throughput of over 1Gbps at a range of 7.9km in the Lake Toba area, North Sumatra Province.
