Spanish operator Cellnex said it has been awarded a total of six projects by the European Commission for the deployment of 5G infrastructure in cross-border corridors, including the launch of a neutral host vehicle to infrastructure (V2X) communications network. The works will cover two road corridors linking Spain with France (Barcelona – Montpellier/Toulouse and Bilbao – Bordeaux) and two corridors linking Spain with Portugal (Salamanca – Porto – Vigo and Merida – Evora) as well as two studies for the EUMOB project with Abertis and a scheme to link Italy and Austria.

The aim of the projects, which are part of the European Commission’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF-2) Digital programme, is to provide high-quality, uninterrupted 5G connectivity for road safety services plus connectivity services to vehicle users and passengers along these corridors. Cellnex said it will deploy 34 new telecommunication sites (including distributed antenna systems ā€“ DAS ā€“ in tunnels), complemented by a V2X communications infrastructure network and edge computing nodes to provide 5G connectivity to more than 1,400 km of the four cross-border corridors.

Taken together, the projects will require an overall investment of around EUR 24 million, half of which will be financed by the European Commission. Work on the projects will begin in January 2023 and is expected to be completed by December 2025, said Cellnex, adding that the rollout is designed to boost the development of connected and automated mobility between large cities and transportation hubs.
