The Mauritian government has announced that citizens aged eighteen to 25 years of age benefit from a free monthly package of 200 GB of mobile data from 01 September. Eligible young people are invited to apply electronically via a platform on the Mauritius Revenue Authority website to obtain the free monthly bundle from their respective internet service provider.
Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth said some 100,000 young people would benefit from the scheme and the package will work on both the 4G and 5G networks. He added that the government will continue to develop the future readiness of the younger generation to succeed in the digital economy. After democratising access to education with free schooling from primary to tertiary levels, he said it was important to work towards making internet access affordable for everyone from any socioeconomic background. As such, he recalled the setting up of 350 Wi-Fi hotspots across the country in 2017.
