Jersey-based JT has partnered with Swedish vendor Ericsson for what has been referred to as ‘the next phase of [its] network transformation journey’. With it confirmed that the two companies will work together on the construction of a new mobile network for the Channel Islands, JT noted that this infrastructure will be powered by Ericsson’s RAN and cloud-native dual-mode 5G Core. With work on the project expected to get underway this year, the companies note that the network modernisation is estimated for completion in 2026.

According to the parties involved, as well as offering improved speeds and security, the network modernisation will bring about noticeable improvements for both businesses and consumers, including better quality on mobile voice calls, increased bandwidth for mobile users and improved coverage. It was also suggested that the work programme will ‘enable future 5G and technology ambitions in the Channel Islands to be met’.

Commenting, Daragh McDermott, CEO of JT Group, said: ‘We are delighted to be working with such a well-known and respected company. Communications technology never stands still, it’s a rapidly changing environment but as with the roll out of fibre, we need to stay ahead of the game and this programme will provide the transformation and leap in technology now required to meet the future demands of businesses and consumers.’
