In a significant gathering of telecommunications leaders, Cenerva’s senior executives participated in the Turks & Caicos Islands Telecommunications Commission’s 20th anniversary celebration, held at the prestigious Beaches Turks & Caicos Resort on November 14-15, 2024.
The two-day event included a Roundtable Discussion Forum focused on “The Impact of Digitalization” bringing together industry experts to examine the evolving telecommunications landscape in the Caribbean region. James Wild, Cenerva’s Managing Partner, shared valuable insights on European digital transformation initiatives and emerging technologies, offering a comparative perspective that resonated with Caribbean stakeholders.
Wild’s contribution highlighted the parallels between European digital evolution and Caribbean opportunities, particularly in areas such as artificial intelligence, IoT implementation, and blockchain technology. His expertise in regulatory frameworks and digital policy provided attendees with practical insights for advancing their own digital agendas.
The second day featured a banquet award ceremony celebrating “20 Years of Innovation: Connecting the Past, Shaping the Future,” recognising key contributors to the region’s telecommunications development.
The event’s highlight was the keynote address delivered by Julian Wilkins, Cenerva’s Ambassador for the Caribbean. Drawing on his extensive experience, including his tenure as Director of Government Relations at Digicel Group and Chairman of CANTO, Wilkins painted a compelling picture of the telecommunications journey in the Caribbean over the past two decades.
In his address, Wilkins emphasised the transformative impact of market liberalisation and competition in the early 2000s, which saw the entry of providers like Digicel. He noted how this competition catalysed significant improvements in connectivity and contributed to economic growth across the region.
However, Wilkins also addressed current challenges, including the need to reinvigorate competition and update regulatory frameworks. He highlighted successful regional case studies, including Trinidad and Tobago’s Ministry of Digital Transformation and the Cayman Islands’ impressive digital connectivity achievements, with internet penetration reaching 91.5%.
“The telecommunications revolution transformed Caribbean societies in profound ways,” Wilkins stated, “but resting on past laurels is not an option. The world is moving forward at an unprecedented pace, and we cannot afford to be left behind.”
The speech resonated particularly well with attendees as it addressed pressing regional concerns, including:
– The need for updated policy and regulatory frameworks to match technological advancement
– The importance of fostering entrepreneurship and innovation in the digital sector
– The critical role of climate resilience in telecommunications infrastructure
– The potential for emerging technologies to drive economic growth
Cenerva’s participation in this landmark event underscores its commitment to supporting telecommunications development in the Caribbean region. The company’s unique position, bridging European expertise with deep understanding of Caribbean markets, continues to make it a valuable partner in the region’s digital transformation journey.
