Video compression and delivery vendor Ateme said it has partnered Austrian broadcast services company ORS Group to conduct a world-first trial of new 5G Broadcast technology. ORS and Ateme joined forces to trial an IP-based streaming service powered by Ateme’s IP statistical multiplex technology NextGen StatMux, enabling live video services delivery via a 5G-Broadcast setup in Vienna.
NextGen StatMux is designed to smooth IP migrations from traditional multiplex broadcasts, offering compatibility with DVB, 3GPP and ATSC standards. In this use case, StatMux was integrated with ORS’s 5G-based Broadcast Nakolos platform to enable transmissions from an IP multiplex containing five broadcast services.
5G-Broadcast is regarded as a promising solution to digital TV multiplexes that have become increasingly crowded on UHF bandwidths allocated to traditional TV services. The technology would be optimised for smaller screens than home TVs allowing broadcasters to deliver multiple services in the same band at high video quality, while catering to near-ubiquitous smartphone usage in many markets.
Ateme believes statistical multiplexing technology will remain critical to 5G-Broadcast delivery. The OBS trial suggested it could achieve up to 20 percent efficiency gains, potentially cramming an additional service into a single 5G-Broadcast band, ORS Group said.
