America Movil has confirmed its intention to take part in the forthcoming tender of 5G spectrum across three bands, despite complaining about the conditions and high cost of the concessions, reports El Financiero, citing the group’s Wholesale Business and Public Affairs chief Alejandro Cantu. “Of course we are going to participate in the next tender, but the policy needs to be updated so that spectrum is no longer regarded as for collection purposes,” he said, adding that prices need to drop to free up resources for investments.
Mexico’s telecommunications watchdog IFT plans to make available a 70 MHz block in the 614 MHz-698 MHz (600 MHz) band, 50 MHz in 3300 MHz-3350 MHz (3.3 GHz) band and 90 MHz in the L-band (1427 MHz-1518 MHz) with a view to boosting 5G coverage capacity, above all in neglected or underserved areas.
Cantu said accessing more spectrum would allow America Movil’s mobile unit Telcel to significantly improve service quality and expand 5G beyond the 104 Mexican cities currently covered.
