US telecoms giant AT&T Communications has revealed plans to reduce its copper footprint by 50% by 2025. By that date, the telco expects that 75% of its network footprint will be served via fibre and 5G. The target was disclosed by CEO John Stankey at AT&T’s 2022 Analyst & Investor Day last week. As part of this strategy, AT&T plans to double its fibre footprint to 30-plus million locations. (Note: AT&T ceased marketing its DSL services to new customers on 1 October 2020.)

In terms of 5G coverage, AT&T aims to deploy 120MHz of mid-band spectrum to cover more than 200 million people by the end of 2023. The company’s existing 5G footprint, which chiefly uses 850MHz former 3G spectrum, covers more than 255 million people in more than 16,000 cities and towns.
