Japan’s leading mobile phone carrier by subscribers, NTT DOCOMO, has released its financial results for the April-December 2021 period, noting that operating revenue edged up marginally but operating profit and net profit fell. The NTT Corp-controlled carrier booked operating revenue of JPY3.518 trillion (USD30.56 billion) in the nine-month period under review, up 4.3% from JPY3.513 trillion in the corresponding year-earlier period, but operating profit sank 52.1% to JPY796.6 billion and net profit declined 31.0% to JPY535.9 billion. 9M capital expenditure, meanwhile, increased by 16.1% year-on-year to JPY376.6 billion from JPY360.5 billion as the company continues to develop its 5G coverage.

Operationally, DOCOMO closed out 31 December 2021 with a total of 83.846 million mobile subscriptions, up from 81.751 million y-o-y, broken down as 8.952 million 5G (Dec-20: 1.413 million), 62.242 million LTE users (Dec-20: 64.012 million) and 12.651 million 3G subscriptions (16.326 million). Furthermore, the carrier’s fibre broadband service, docomo Hikari, continues to grow, reaching a total of 7.254 million subscriptions at end-2021, up from 6.935 million a year earlier.
