India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will seek input from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on the allocation of spectrum in the 95GHz to 3THz range for use in research and development of 6G technologies, the Economic Times writes, citing a senior DoT official. According to the source, the airwaves would be used for ‘experimental purposes to develop products and solutions based on new technologies, particularly the sixth generation (6G)’. The initiative is intended to allow institutions, research organisations and industry players to obtain airwaves to conduct pre-standardisation studies. By doing so India could take a more active role in standards setting, the official added, noting that this would also strengthen India’s tech manufacturing industries.
