The CEO of Italian fixed wireless access (FWA) provider EOLO says the government should allocate unused spectrum in the 26GHz band to improve rural broadband services. Of the total spectrum between 24.25GHz and 27.5GHz, 1GHz was allocated to five telcos at auction in 2018, while another 1GHz is utilised on an extension basis by various entities and the remainder is free.

EOLO boss Guido Garrone is cited by Kedy4Biz as saying: ‘To allow for this technology to express its maximum potential, it is essential to proceed quickly with a reallocation of the 26GHz band. I hope that this process will take place through competitive procedures that enhance the operators who have demonstrated over the years that they make efficient use of the assigned spectrum and who have the assets and skills to contribute to achieving the country’s connectivity objectives.’

It is thought that fixed wireless technology will be essential in connecting around 5.8 million rural properties if Italy wants to reach the goals set in its ‘Italia 1 Giga’ plan.
