Italian operators Fastweb and Sky Italia have joined forces with media technology specialist NVP to test 5G-backed immersive broadcasting experiences at forthcoming Euroleague basketball games. Under the “Immersive Basket Experience” project, funded by Italy’s Ministry of Economic Development (Mise), the partners will be piloting the latest live TV production technology during the home games of Olimpia Milano in the 2022-23 edition of the Euroleague.

A total of six 360-degree cameras will be installed in strategic points of the Mediolanum Forum indoor arena in Assago to offer footage from different angles, all of which are connected via a 5G SA network on the 26 GHz band set up by Fastweb. The 5G antennas are in turn linked to Sky’s remote control room.

The pilot will begin on 14 October during Olimpia Milano’s debut Euroleague game against Alba Berlin, to be broadcast live on Sky Sport Uno. The partners said the immersive experience will subsequently be made available to the public in an as yet unspecified manner.
