Hutchison Telecommunications Lanka (Hutch) is teaming up with infrastructure partner edotco Services Lanka on the launch of an Open RAN trial in Sri Lanka. The two firms ultimately aim to drive down the per-GB cost of data on the island and to that end have deployed their first trial Open RAN site at Polatthapitya in Kurunegala District. The trial will reportedly be carried out using edotco’s ‘multi-purpose lamp pole site, which is a small-cell antennae enabled telecommunication infrastructure known to facilitate seamless connectivity at both urban and rural settings’. The Malaysia-based vendor currently operates a solid infrastructure network of 500 multi-purpose lamp pole sites.
