Mauritanian cellco Mattel, which is backed by Tunisie Telecom, has launched a pilot 5G network in conjunction with equipment partner Huawei. The firm claims to be the first Mauritanian operator to begin testing 5G technology and says it has achieved download rates of 2Gbps on its trial network.

TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that Mattel competes in Mauritania’s mobile sector with market leader Moov Mauritel and smaller rival Chinguitel.
