MTN Zambia has announced the launch of a 5G pilot project in partnership with Chinese vendor Huawei, ITNews Africa reports. With Zambia’s Minister of Science and Technology, Felix Mutati, in attendance at a 5G demonstration held earlier this week in Lusaka, the minister claimed the development put Zambia among the first ten African countries currently piloting the next generation of mobile broadband technology.

MTN Zambia CEO Bart Hofker was reported to have commended the government for making 5G a priority, while also praising Huawei for offering its technical support. ‘I would like to thank our partner Huawei, they made it possible and they have been always super on board to make sure that this is done and we thank them for that. 5G is creating opportunities for many people all of the world and in Zambia,’ the executive said.
