Philippines operator Smart Communications has teamed up with Oppo to explore and develop 5G Standalone (5G-SA) use cases in the Philippines. This comes after Smart’s recent activation of commercial 5G-SA sites in Makati.
Smart and Oppo have previously tested Oppo’s 5G smartphones’ compatibility on Smart’s 5G-SA network using the OPPO Find X3 Pro, as well as demonstrated the potential of Voice over New Radio (VoNR). Smart made its first successful VoNR call as early as July 2021 at the Technolab.
To access Smartās 5G network, customers can upgrade to Oppo Reno5 5G, A74 5G, the latest Reno6 Series, and Find X2 Pro, which are available with Smart Signature Plans. Smart reports it currently has over 6,400 5G base stations across the Philippines.
