Telecom Argentina said intends to invest around USD 500 million this year to continue rolling out its fibre-optic, 4G and 5G networks, reports Telesesmana, citing the company’s CTO Miguel Fernandez. The commitment will see the operator increase its fifth-generation infrastructure to 260 sites, up from the current figure of around 100, said the executive in a company press conference in Buenos Aires.
The operator last year acquired a 100MHz block of 5G spectrum in the 3.5GHz band for around USD 350 million, over two years after switching on the country’s first 5G network over 4G spectrum (5G DSS). It now has around 2.5 million clients on 5G, with around 16 percent of its customer base on 5G-compatible devices.
It is also aiming to double its fibre base from the current figure of around 500,000 clients to 1 million by the end of 2024 and to begin testing 5G FWA in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA) and in rural parts of the northern Tucuman province.
