Egypt’s National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) has granted Telecom Egypt the country’s first licence to install and operate a 5G network, at a cost of USD 150 million. The 5G licence will be valid for 15 years.

Telecom Egypt said it took this step to expedite the nation’s digitalisation process and foster the expansion of various industries’ advancements, which will ultimately benefit the entire economy and improve Egypt’s international ranking in the ICT sector.

The 5G technology will provide lower latency, higher capacity, and increased bandwidth, which will improve the overall customer experience thanks to seamless connectivity, particularly during periods of usage spikes. Businesses will also be able to better analyze big amounts of data, helping them to improve their efficiency and scale up.

Telecom Egypt operates the We mobile network, the most recent entrant on the market with around 12.5 million customers. TE said the company’s capital expenditure over the past few years is bearing fruit and it plans to leverage the license to enhance the customer experience, fulfil the expectations of both consumers and businesses, while maximizing shareholder value.
