Telefonica Germany said it has tested holographic telephony via 5G for the first time to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the O2 mobile network. The holographic telephony was tested by Bavarian prime minister Markus Soeder with a smartphone and virtual reality glasses. The telephone call took place over a secured network environment and managed by an application developed by the start-up Matsuko, a partner of Telefonica.

Holographic communication enables calls via the 5G mobile network and depicts the participants in the conversation as a two or three-dimensional image. In the future, the ultra-fast 5G network could make hologram communication the standard for private and business customers. Telefonica is working on further developing 5G applications.
