Telekom Romania Mobile Communications issued a press release on 14 June confirming that its new 5G mobile network is available in eleven cities, namely: Bucharest (including Otopeni), Brasov (including Poiana Brasov), Sibiu, Cluj-Napoca, Timisoara, Iasi, Constanta (including Mamaia), Ploiesti, Craiova, Pitesti and Oradea. ‘Unlimited 5G’ services are available to all pre-paid and post-paid customers with compatible SIMs and devices.

Company CTO Florin Petolea declared: ‘[Telekom] managed to implement the 5G network in just a few months, in several regions of the country, using state-of-the-art equipment. Thus, our network complies with the highest technological standards specific to a network of the future, including environmentally friendly energy supply sources.’ The release adds that the 5G launch ‘benefited from the support of Samsung as an implementation partner to ensure terminal compatibility.’

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate in April Telekom Romania Mobile Communications switched on 5G services enabling peak download/upload data speeds of 250Mbps/50Mbps in four cities using its existing radio spectrum, having sat out last year’s 5G frequency auction. Rival cellcos Vodafone, DIGI and Orange all launched commercial 5G services in 2019.
