Telia Lietuva has announced the expansion of its 5G network to the cities of Birzai, Pakruoji and Kupiski, all located in the northeast of the country. The latest expansion has increased overall 5G coverage to 95% of the population, with this set to rise to 99% by mid-summer. The final cities scheduled to be connected are Zarasai, Visaginas and Rokiskis in July.
As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, Telia paid EUR23 million (USD25.4 million) for one 2×10MHz block of 700MHz spectrum and EUR7 million for 100MHz of 3.5GHz spectrum at auction in August 2022 and went on to launch 5G using its recently acquired frequencies the following month, having operated a 2100MHz 5G network in the capital Vilnius since the start of the year. The 3.5GHz service covers densely populated areas and can reach maximum speeds of up to 2Gbps, while the 700MHz band network has slower speeds but covers a much wider area. Telia rolled out more than 1,200 5G base stations operating in the 700MHz and 3.5GHz bands last year.
