Latvian operator LMT, in cooperation with the company LVR Flote, a provider of technical services to the Riga sea-port, carried out tests and demonstration of a maritime 5G solution using both aerial and underwater drones. During the demonstration, the 5G network supported real-time transfer of large volumes of data and continuous 5G connectivity at sea. The trial was carried out on board of the icebreaker Varma.

During the demonstration, it was possible to observe the 5G multi-hop principle in action, which ensured communication between LVR Fleet vessels and aerial and underwater drones. LMT said it was able to provide “flawless” 5G mobile data transmission, which allowed simultaneous data exchange between ships and drones on the water and in the air.

This is a follow-up to the first successful tests in November 2023, when a 5G connection to a ship was established using a land-based 5G network, and 5G network connectivity was successfully provided from the ship to the end user.
