The Vodafone Business unit of Vodafone Italia has reached an agreement to create a new industrial 5G private mobile network (MPN), this time for natural gas provider Snam. The infrastructure, described as the first hybrid 5G MPN set up in the energy sector in Italy, will provide dedicated coverage across Snam’s 23 national plants, allowing the company to connect a large number of devices simultaneously and introduce a wide range of innovative services and applications, said Vodafone.

Examples include connected field sensors for the collection of large quantities of data, anti-intrusion cameras and sensors, connected drones, applications for remote diagnostics and monitoring of systems, as well as augmented (AR) and virtual reality (VR) platforms for remote assistance and the training of technicians.

The hybrid infrastructure will also give Snam staff access to a high-speed, low-latency 5G network that offers the highest safety standards in the transmission and segregation of data, added Vodafone.
